One Times One

After-Hours Sighting Report

Subject: Prudence
Location: Elementary School, Rotterdam, New York
Time: 6:42 p.m., December (year withheld)

A substitute teacher staying late to prepare lesson plans reported hearing a woman’s voice coming from the empty classroom across the hall. At first, she assumed another staff member had returned, but the voice followed a strict rhythm—slow, deliberate, instructional.

She recognized the cadence immediately.

It was counting.

The substitute stated the voice recited multiplication tables without pause, never correcting itself, never varying in tone. Between equations, the voice whispered short biblical phrases under its breath, as if addressing unseen students. The classroom lights were off.

When the teacher stepped inside, the room was empty except for a porcelain doll seated on the teacher’s desk, staring at the whiteboard and visualizer. The board was clean when she entered. As she watched, faint marks began appearing line by line, forming a single sentence over and over:

ONE TIMES ONE IS ONE

Thunder sounded outside—one sharp crack—despite clear skies and no storm warnings.

The substitute attempted to leave, but reported being unable to open the classroom door for several seconds while the counting continued behind her. When the door finally opened, the voice stopped mid-sentence.

Later that night, security logs recorded the sound of a bell ringing once at 7:13 p.m. No motion was detected. No weather event was recorded.

The substitute resigned the following morning. She did not meet Prudence's exacting qualifications.
